If I Could Fall Into The Sky....

Sometimes we have heard a song so many times that we forget why we loved it in the first place. This happens to me so often. I discover a song that I think is a gem and I play it over and over, just allowing the lyrics to wash over me, applying them to memories and people and feelings. But then the song becomes popular and everyone starts singing it, making fun of it, spoofing it....or I just listen to it so many times or hear it so much that I forget to actually hear it, it just becomes background noise. But then I don't hear it for a while and it suddenly pops up somehow, whether it be when my Zune is on shuffle or because, as in this case, someone did a cover.

"A Thousand Miles" by Vanessa Carlton is such a classically beautiful song. The first time I heard it, it ripped out my heart. I discovered Vanessa Carlton in high school. I was going through a phase of her genre--I don't even know how to classify her, Pop seems so inappropriate, so does Alternative-- but she was grouped together with Michelle Branch and I guess later on Sarah Barellies. It was a group of ladies who's lyrics I wanted to write because they had so much poetry flowing through them; who's songs I wanted to sing because their voices held something crazy beautiful in them. They just, touched me. But then this song was in White Chicks or some similar movie and the humor found in it just ruined it. I couldn't even look at it the same. I forgot what the song meant and why I loved it.
However, upon hearing Boyce Avenue's version of it, I've fallen in love with it again. That simple opening melody that carries throughout the song, laying a foundation. It begins and ends the same. The simplicity of the lyrics are heartbreaking. A story that so many can relate to-- taking a walk and reminiscing on a love lost. Wondering if they are thinking of you like you're thinking of them. Wondering what it would take to just see them, the way they were one last time. Getting so caught up in the memory of what was that you are on auto pilot. It's a story of love lost, remembered, and missed in the simplest moment. It's beautiful. I've fallen in love with the lyrics again, and I hope this cover will make you fall in love with them (again or for the first time) too:

Making my way downtown/ walking fast/ faces pass/ and I'm home bound
Staring blankly ahead/ just making my way/ making a way/ through the crowd
And I need you/ And I miss you/ and now I wonder...
If I could fall/ into the sky/ do you think time/ would pass me by/ cause you know I'd walk/ a thousand miles/ if I could/ just see you/ tonight
It's always times like these/ when I think of you/ and I wonder/ if you ever/ think of me
Cause everything's so wrong/ and I don't belong/ living in your/ precious memory
Cause I need you/ And I miss you/ and now I wonder...
If I could fall/ into the sky/ do you think time/ would pass me by/ cause you know I'd walk/ a thousand miles/ if I could/ just see you/ tonight
And I, I/ Don't wanna let you know/ I, I/ drown in your memory/ I, I/ don't wanna let this go/ I, I/ Don't

Making my way downtown/ walking fast/ faces pass/ and I'm home bound
Staring blankly ahead/ just making my way/ making a way/ through the crowd
And I still need you/ And I still miss you/ and now I wonder...

If I could fall/ into the sky/ do you think time/ would pass me by/ cause you know I'd walk/ a thousand miles/ if I could/ just see you/ tonight

If I could fall/ into the sky/ do you think time/ would pass me by/ cause you know I'd walk/ a thousand miles/ if I could/ just see you/ if I could/ just hold you/tonight
